How to Prevent Light Decay of LED Panel Lights?

Light decay is a common problem that affects the performance and lifespan of Led Panel Lights. It refers to the gradual decrease in light output over time due to various factors, such as temperature, current, and quality of the LED chips and components. In this article, we will explain what causes light decay, how to measure it, and how to prevent it.

What Causes Light Decay of LED Panel Lights?

The main cause of light decay of LED panel lights is the increase in the junction temperature of the LED chips. The junction temperature is the temperature at the point where the positive and negative electrodes of the LED chip meet. When the junction temperature exceeds a certain limit, the LED chip will emit less light and lose its efficiency. This limit varies depending on the type and quality of the LED chip, but it is usually around 120°C.

There are several factors that can increase the junction temperature of the LED chips

The driving current: The higher the current, the more heat is generated by the LED chip. Therefore, it is important to use a constant current driver that can regulate the current and voltage according to the LED specifications.

The ambient temperature: The higher the ambient temperature, the more difficult it is for the LED chip to dissipate heat. Therefore, it is important to install the LED panel lights in a well-ventilated and cool environment.

The heat dissipation design: The heat dissipation design of the LED panel light affects how efficiently the heat is transferred from the LED chip to the surrounding air. Therefore, it is important to use a high-quality aluminum frame, a good thermal interface material, and a suitable heat sink to enhance the heat dissipation performance of the LED panel light.

How to Measure Light Decay of LED Panel Lights?

The standard way to measure light decay of LED panel lights is to use the luminous flux maintenance rate. This is the ratio of the luminous flux (the amount of light emitted) of the LED panel light at a certain time after installation to the initial luminous flux. For example, if the initial luminous flux of an LED panel light is 1000 lumens, and the luminous flux after 3000 hours of use is 900 lumens, then the luminous flux maintenance rate is 90%.

The luminous flux maintenance rate of LED panel lights depends on the quality of the LED chips and components, the driving current, the ambient temperature, and the heat dissipation design. Different countries and regions have different standards and requirements for the luminous flux maintenance rate of LED panel lights. For example, the US Energy Star program requires that the luminous flux maintenance rate of LED panel lights should be at least 70% after 25,000 hours of use.

How to Prevent Light Decay of LED Panel Lights?

The best way to prevent light decay of LED panel lights is to choose high-quality LED panel lights that use reliable LED chips and components, have a proper driving current, and have a good heat dissipation design. Some tips to choose and install LED panel lights are:

Check the specifications of the LED panel lights, such as the type, brand, and quantity of the LED chips, the rated power, the luminous efficiency, the color temperature, the color rendering index, the beam angle, and the warranty period. Compare different LED panel lights and choose the ones that suit your needs and budget.

Use a constant current driver that can provide a stable and suitable current and voltage for the LED panel lights. Avoid using a voltage-driven driver that can cause overcurrent and overheating of the LED chips.

Install the LED panel lights in a well-ventilated and cool environment. Avoid direct sunlight, high humidity, and dust. Keep the LED panel lights away from heat sources, such as stoves, heaters, and fireplaces.

Clean the LED panel lights regularly to remove dust and dirt that can affect the light output and heat dissipation. Use a soft cloth or a vacuum cleaner to gently wipe or suck the dust. Do not use water or any corrosive substances to clean the LED panel lights.

Replace the LED panel lights when they show signs of severe light decay, such as flickering, dimming, or changing color. Do not try to repair the LED panel lights by yourself. Contact a professional electrician or the manufacturer for assistance.

By following these tips, you can prevent light decay of LED panel lights and enjoy their long-lasting and energy-efficient performance.
